Microsoft’s Xbox One launch was a misstep, and the company struggled to regain momentum throughout the eighth console generation. Despite the power of the Xbox One X, the appeal of Game Pass Ultimate, and strategic acquisitions of major game studios, the console ultimately sold less than half the units of Sony’s PlayStation 4.
The Xbox Series X, however, was a chance for Microsoft to reset and start fresh with the next generation of gaming. This time, the company opted for a two-tiered approach, offering both the less powerful Series S and the flagship Series X, both sharing similar hardware and supporting the same games. As the most powerful home console available today, the Series X easily surpasses the PlayStation 5 in raw technical specifications.
In addition to its power, the Xbox Series X is packed with user-friendly features, including fast load times, the ability to quickly swap between open games, and extensive backward compatibility with older titles. While these aspects make the Series X an impressive piece of hardware, its exclusive game library remains a significant downside. Despite Microsoft’s acquisitions, including Activision Blizzard, the Series X still lags behind the PS5 in terms of exclusive content. Additionally, Microsoft's decision to release exclusives on both console and PC, with the added bonus of Game Pass access on day one, weakens the appeal of buying a Series X for those already owning a gaming PC.
Design-wise, the Xbox Series X stands out with its unique look. Unlike any previous Xbox console, it takes on a compact tower shape similar to a desktop PC. Standing about a foot tall and six inches wide, the Series X is a dense piece of tech, tipping the scales at almost 10 pounds. The default vertical orientation is indicated by a non-removable base at the bottom, but it can also be laid horizontally for a more traditional setup. Microsoft’s minimalist approach to the design gives the Series X a clean, modern look that contrasts with the more elaborate and curved PlayStation 5.
The front of the Series X features a subtle power button at the top left (in vertical mode), a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, and an eject button. A USB port and Bluetooth connectivity button are located on the bottom right. On the back, there are two USB ports, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and a power cable port. The standout feature on the back is the storage expansion slot, which is designed to work exclusively with Seagate’s custom Storage Expansion Cards, ensuring performance matches the internal SSD. Unfortunately, these cards come with a hefty price tag, with the 1TB card costing $150 and the 2TB version priced at $220.
When it comes to the controller, Microsoft has largely kept the same design from the Xbox One. While the controller remains comfortable and reliable, it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. The most notable changes are a circular and raised directional pad, improved texture on the triggers and grips, and the addition of a dedicated screenshot/share button. Though not as innovative as the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller, the Xbox Series X controller remains a solid, familiar choice for players.
While the Xbox Series X is an incredibly powerful console with many impressive features, its exclusivity issues and high storage costs are hurdles that Microsoft must address if they want to win over more gamers in this new generation.
