Two years ago, Tudor announced its entry into the cycling world, partnering with cycling legend Fabian Cancellara to form the Tudor Pro Cycling Team. Part of the Chase Cancellara series, the Bern-Zermatt event is a serious challenge for competitors, covering over 310 kilometers and 5,000 meters of climbing. Surrounded by stunning natural scenery and ending in a city at the foot of the Matterhorn, the route is one of the most challenging single-day amateur cycling races in Switzerland. The race started at 3am in the Swiss capital of Bern and soon we were entering the Gantrich region. At dawn we faced the toughest challenge of the day: the Alpine passes of Rifenmatt, Mittelberg and Puyon Pass. Along the way we enjoyed stunning views of the Gruyere and Gstaad regions. After descending the Puyon Pass we crossed the Rhône Valley from Aigle to Visp, facing strong headwinds all the way. The final obstacle was a grueling 28km climb to Zermatt in pouring rain... and then a beer at the finish line. We were exhausted but happy that we had cycled through Switzerland.

As its name suggests, the Pelagos FXD Chrono Cycling Edition is a cycling-themed Pelagos, with key features including a carbon composite case and a black dial with a cycling-specific tachymeter scale.

The round case is 43 mm in diameter, features pump pushers and a screw-down crown, and features unique guards. The case is made from a single piece of matte black carbon composite with titanium elements, making it lightweight, strong and highly biocompatible. Needless to say, these materials are popular in racing. Carbon fiber doesn't have any pattern. Pelagos’ diving DNA has been transformed by its association with cycling. The case features a fixed bezel with a 60-minute scale. The water resistance rating has been "downgraded" to 100 meters, but is still sufficient for those who lead a sporty, active lifestyle. The matte black dial is in typical Tudor style, with square hour markers and “snowflake” hands. Red accents on the counters and tachymeter echo the colors of Tudor Pro Cycling. I prefer a brighter red though to bring in more contrast. The use of luminous ceramic composite blocks allows for optimal readability in harsh conditions. Finally, the tachymeter scale is wound around the flange 4 times to calibrate it to measure how fast the cyclist is riding (while still measuring speeds up to 240 units/hour). This does make more sense than a traditional speedometer scale calibrated for a car or airplane.

The Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono Cycling Edition is powered by the automatic movement MT5813. It is based on the Breitling B01 with several improvements from Tudor, including an anti-magnetic silicon oscillator. With it, you get a modern premium chronograph with an integrated construction featuring a column wheel and vertical clutch. It drives a dual chronograph layout with a small seconds at 9 o'clock and a 45-minute chronograph subdial at 3 o'clock. The date is displayed at 6 o'clock. The Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono Cycling Edition features a one-piece fabric strap secured by a fixed strap bar (hence the name FXD, which stands for Fixed - first seen on the Marine Nationale) and closed by a pin buckle. On the wrist, it looks great, blending an understated look with a sporty feel. At 43mm it's certainly a pretty big watch, but it's surprisingly comfortable to wear considering its size. The understated black case makes it appear smaller than its actual diameter. Its lightweight carbon/titanium case also makes it very comfortable to wear. You almost forget it's on your wrist.

A bicycle-themed speedometer scale adds a touch of sportiness. Like a motorsport style tachometer, most people won't use this feature very often - if at all. Cyclists rely on GPS and computers. However, this feature enhances the watch’s appeal to cycling enthusiasts (like me), creating a special connection.
